If you can remember when Elvis, The Shadows, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were in the charts, then you should make sure you’re here at TCAT on 12 September where some of the lads (lads!) who couldn’t resist copying those artists will still be doing what comes naturally.
They formed bands such as The Starfires, The Avengers, The Variations, Nashville Skyline, Gary Kane & The Tornadoes, The Stringbeats, The Midnight Blues, The Silvertones, The Hotspots, Sweeny, The Maurice Price Band and The Vic Palmer Sound were among the many that entertained the young folk of the time. Members of all those bands, and many more, will be among a “who’s who” of Exe Valley singers and musicians who will be pounding it out to raise money for Hospiscare in what should be a night to remember.
The background to the event is that each month a group of senior musicians meets in Exeter to chat about music, their memories and their experiences. A while ago someone suggested putting together a gig they could all take part in. This will be the fourth such event but in a much larger venue than before. Not all can make it but about two dozen of them, in various combinations; will rock it up to recreate those days when you enjoyed their music in a venue near you.
Fifty years ago the members of Tiverton Youth Club staged “Youth Entertains” on the same stage in Tiverton. While no longer quite youthful, the musicians on show will still rock it up with the same youthful energy and exuberance as they did in the 60’s. Some are now members of present day bands, such as Five Shades of Grey, Monopole, Hard Times and Stay Lucky, while others still perform given the slightest opportunity.
So be there, enjoy the music, get on your feet, soak up the nostalgia and help raise money for a very worthy cause, Hospiscare. Don’t forget, it’s Saturday 12th September. Tickets are available; price £8, from the theatre box office or online:
